Questions

Feb. 27, 2012
After meeting with my mentor (Dr. Page) and thinking about what I'd like to do for my field study, I've concluded that I just want to focus on health education at Liahona high school.

Focus question: What is the curriculum for health education at Liahona high school?

Jan. 18, 2012
Here's the big question(s) I would like to focus my field study on:

How effective is health education&promotion in Tonga?
Are there significant differences between health education/promotion approaches that different health settings use? What kinds of methods do health settings use to promote healthy behavior and lifestyles?

-health education taught in high schools, primary schools
what is the health curriculum like?  What are the class learning outcomes?  What kinds of health problems are mentioned?  What kind of information is emphasized in classes?  What age group receives health education?  Is the information relevant to students?  Is there a health center on campus?  If so, do they provide additional health information for students?  What kinds of services do they offer?  What is the role of health centers on campus?  Are they useful to students, or do students/faculty utilize them?
-health education taught in hospitals (ministry of health?)
What health services are offered?  What education is taught here?  What kinds of educational programs are available for community members?  Are those programs effective?  What kinds of programs does the ministry of health sponsor or offer?  Are those effective, or successful?
-health education taught in clinics
What health services are offered here?  What kinds of health education is offered?  What kinds of groups do they target?  Are these programs effective?

Are there significant differences between health education in hospitals and clinics, or other health settings?  Are there significant differences between hospital and health clinics health education approahes?  What kinds of factors impact healthy lifestyles?

So here are my 25 questions.  Some of the questions relate to other questions, and so I'm in the process of grouping similar questions or settings.  Most of my questions I could get answers just from observing.  In class on Friday, we talked about how important it is to gain observation skills.  Sometimes we only see things above the surface, and not beneath.  We observed a picture in class, which was a picture taken in Tonga, of people at a funeral.  I was very familiar with the picture and what was going on in the picture because of my own background and experience of going to Tongan funerals.  There is a certain way to dress, act, speak...ect. for Tongans during a funeral.  I'm very familiar with other Tongan customs and cultural events because I am Tongan, and both my parents were born and raised there.  I'm just hoping that when I do go and do my field study project, that I won't overlook things, just because I'm familiar with a lot of things and their lifestyles....
Again, I am very very excited to start focusing on my field study topic and scope!  I really cant wait to go to Tonga!!:)
